Floral phenology, secondary pollen presentation and pollination mechanism in Inula racemosa (Angiosperms: Asteraceae) -- Peerzada Arshid Shabir, Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo & Aijaz Ahmad Wani, Pp. 4498–4503 dx.doi.org/10.11609/JoTT.o3320.4498-503 1. The purpose of the present study was to describe floral functional morphology and phenology of a critically endangered, Himalayan herb Inula racemosa. 2. For this end, three populations growing at different altitudes (1595 - 2650 m asl) across the Kashmir Himalaya were assessed. 3. The study revealed that I. racemosa has a system of secondary pollen presentation. 4. During anthesis, the bending behaviour of the I. racemosa style and the sweeping hairs of its two branches help the growing style to move the pollens out of the anthers efficiently. 5. The secondary pollen presentation system and the fine-scale morphology and structure of style indicate that there is some adaptive advantage to be derived from their formation. 6. This paper also presents an attempt to make a formal analysis of the total phonological calendar in populations of I. racemosa growing over the wide range of different altitudinal gradients. 7. The study can provide a broad readership for those interested in conservation and cultivation of such rare and endangered species.
