Fluency Markers/ Fillers 1- What are the Fluency Markers/ Fillers? They are expressions which are used at the beginning or during the talk. For example, to be (perfectly) honest, ............. I suppose, ........ I think, .............Well, ............. so, ......... you know, ............ hey! ................ guess what! .................. I guess .................... actually, ............. I mean ............... and so on ............ To be honest, I dont cooking much at all. Im afraid Im not very good at it. Though I do like making snacks or sandwiches and so on. Well, actually, I dont get much time for exercise these days. I mean, I work long hours most days and I just dont get the chance, really. Well, I suppose I like documentaries best, but they have to be on interesting topics, of course. * Im afraid is used to tell someone politely something something that may annoy or disappoint him. * I mean is used when explaining or giving an example of something. * Actually is used to say what really happens or is really true. * To be honest is used to tell someone what you really think. * and so on is used after a list to show there are other similar things that could be mentioned. * Well, I suppose is used to say you think something is true, although you are uncertain about it. Why are the Fluency Markers/ Fillers used? 1- The Fluency Markers/ Fillers are used to make the speech natural. 2- The Fluency Markers/ Fillers are used to give the speaker thinking time.
