Fluoro Friday: Blue LED inventors win the Nobel Prize! Congratulations to the co-inventors of the blue LED, who were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics this week. Blue LEDs were the key to the now-ubiquitous white-light LED lights for dive and home, and also for the bright blue flashlights we have for fluorescence diving. LEDs that emitted anywhere from green to red have been around since the 1960’s, but without blue there was no way to use them to create white light. This is done either by combining multiple colors (RGB) or coating blue LEDs with a phosphor that produces longer wavelengths to fill out the spectrum. To find out more just google ‘blue LED Nobel’ to find many articles, or try this link to start - bit.ly/natgeo-led. The over/under photo here showing a well-equipped blue light diver was taken by the talented Susannah Snowden.
