FoD Weather has updated an Amber Warning of Wind and Rain for the following forecast areas: Forest of Dean Vale of Leadon Issued: 08:30 Wednesday 13th January Valid: 12:00 Wednesday 14th January to 18:00 Thursday 15th January *HEAVY RAIN AND POTENTIALLY DAMAGING WINDS EXPECTED LATER TODAY AND THURSDAY* Confidence is now high in a potentially severe weather event during the next 36 hours. An intense Atlantic storm system will pass close to northwest Scotland during tonight and Thursday. This system will bring a spell of very heavy rain and gales with potentially damaging winds associated with its frontal zone. A second spell of strong winds is possible Thursday as the low passes to the north. *RAIN - A band of heavy and squally rain is forecast along the frontal zone and is likely to affect our area during this evening and with the heaviest rain likely overnight. Rainfall amounts of 20 to 40mm are possible, with a risk of locally higher amounts - especially over high ground. Some forecast models are predicting totals of over 40 mm over high and exposed ground, and totals this high cannot be ruled out for our area. The main rain band will clear eastwards during the early morning Thursday but further heavy and possibly wintry showers are likely through Thursday. *WIND - Winds will increase during this afternoon to bring gusts to near gale force by evening across exposed locations. Winds will increase further during this evening, peaking as the front passes - mostlikely between 10pm and 2am tonight. We currently expect widespread gusts of 40 to 50 mph across most areas. However, potentially damaging gusts of over 60 mph, maybe even over 70 mph, are possible in exposed locations and over high ground. Winds will rapidly decrease during the early hours of Thursday morning after the front passes. There is also the risk of a second round of strong winds with gusts to around 50mph during the late morning and afternoon Thursday as the low pressure centre passes north. However, this stillremains uncertain. *IMPACTS - Disruption to travel can be expected, especially overnight tonight. Heavy rain will lead to localised flooding of roadways and other prone spots. Should we see higher rainfall amounts we can also expect there to be some river and stream flooding. The strong winds will cause damage to trees, with some likely to be snapped or uprooted. There may also be disruption to local power supplies. Damage to fence panels is possible to, as is other minor damage. *NEXT UPDATE - This Warning will be updated by 18:00 Wednesday 14th January.
