Focus for this week in Wiggle and Grow: Speaking versus Singing While toddlers vary in terms of vocal experience, development and confidence, child experts agree that at age 24 months, children should be able to say 50-75 words with comprehension already. When counting our childs words, please exclude mama, papa, angkong, a, b, c, 1, 2, 3 and anything route. Even though children can say only a few words at this stage, they can comprehend at least 200 words. They should be able to respond to three-step directions at the age of 18 months. Most children in Wiggle and Grow are at this stage that musical specialists refer to as an “approximation of singing.” Their first attempts at singing would be the imitations of a word, phrase, rhytmic pattern or vocal inflection and these attempts rarely occur in precise coordination with a singing activity. The children may make these imitative sounds while playing alone, using bits and pieces from the sounds they have heard in our Kindermusik classes. This is an important step in vocal development. Rhythmic language such as poems and chants, songs within a limited range (two-note playground songs specifically the sol-mi interval), imitation and play with silly words, rhymes and songs all contribute to vocal development. Most toddlers do more singing at home where they are most comfortable and have less social distraction. Some children, however, may be able to sing entire songs and will do so happily in class. Through play, listening, vocalizing and experiencing the joy of singing without the pressure to perform, children are able to develop their complete singing range and ability. See you in class!
