FolkEast Ltd Review clip:) Crumbs for Comfort were next on stage. A true favourite of mine, I was very excited to hear them play. Jack and Meg, two fans from Beccles, were also eager to hear them. Whilst waiting, they enthusiastically told me how much they had loved the festival so far, that it felt ‘very safe’ and ‘inclusive’ and urged me to check out The Dhol Foundation who had played the main stage the night before. The eight-piece band came on stage, filling up the tent with interested audience members. Ben, Alex and Starbuck, the three main vocalists, took to the very front of the stage and begun with a cover from the hit television series Nashville. The band has so much musical goodness; with their own distinct sound, they remind me of a merge between true Folk, Foo Fighters, Cara Dillon, Seth Lakeman, Belle & Sebastian, with elements of Jonh Butler Trio. They are essentially a folk/rock group at the core, with some beautiful harmonies and melodies. Any fans of Mumford & Sons should certainly investigate. At every level the instruments were being played with mood and creating lyrical imagery and the band as an entity had great energy and amazing depths and dynamics. ‘Lowestoft Bay’ is a great track to listen to - the urgency in the lyrics and the social concerns are shown clearly through the passion of singer Alex and the rest of the band. Alex’s ‘witchy song’ also has great pace and mood and ‘Look into the light’ is evidence of the great wisdom held in the band – it starts very much with a Fleetwood Mac tone and is encouraged further with Ben’s authenticity and strength in his voice. ‘Labour in your love’ is another brilliant song that shows the bands fantastic playing skills and their ability to harmonise vocal elixir; Starbuck herself has a voice of an angel, very pure and beautiful and is certainly one to listen out for. After the set I spoke to Ben Chenery. The founder of the band and the dancing rhythm bear of the group (who regularly waltzes with his guitar) Ben commented how he feels like being at Folk East is like being in a creative valley. Along with many other musicians, he also appreciated the space between stages, along with the abundance of kids crafts, bicycles and art around the festival. As he says, it ‘brings out the best in people,’ there’s so much creativity. Crumbs for Comfort really are local gems, a band that shows song writing and musicianship at its best. I felt again like I was listening to the radio and I was very privileged to have them in a marquee in Suffolk – Chris Evans should leave Carfest and come here next year !
