Folks - in the wake of the Detroit Symphonys reading session on March 9th, the symposium at Boston University almost two weeks ago, and my two concerts focusing on the legacy of compositions for concert band, brass ensemble and organ by African-American composers, please read this! But after you read it, I have a major question to ask - why is it that major African-American performers and entrepreneurs will put their finances towards many noble causes in the Black community, but turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to men and women of color who bring a positive element to the community by composing and/or performing classical music? Is it that were perceived as the new Uncle Toms? Are we looked at as sellouts and wannabes? I want some real answers and what can we do to bring a change to this matter of ignoring the positive?
