Folks Im going to be honest: I was quite disappointed by our discussion in Forum today. I dont think we achieved our goal of respecting people, and I think the topic of our responses to Ferguson is important enough that we make an extra effort to be the sort of community we hope to be, and which is consistent with our values. I dont think Brent was at fault here - I think it was more ourselves and the way we carried out the discussion. As a staff person present I hold myself partly responsible too. I wonder if we can find ways to engage people with differing views on this matter - including views we might find ethically insensitive or even wrong - in a way which demonstrates respect for them. I recognize this is extremely difficult, particularly when people are (justifiably) angry. I am angry myself - in fact I am furious - but I recognize not everyone has my British stoicism ;). How can we better explore these issues with each other in a way which might promote ethical growth?
