Folks, Please the SLPP position on the ongoing Ebola saga in our nation. Thanks for sharing and your comments too. ONE COUNTRY, ONE PEOPLE PRESS RELEASE (Freetown, August 15th, 2014) The Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) bemoans the continued spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in communities across the country, especially in the epicenters of Kailahun and Kenema districts. We are particularly disturbed by the apparent vulnerability of our health workers who have continued to be infected in the line of duty. Our hearts go out to the family of Dr. Modupeh Cole, other healthcare workers, and the many Sierra Leoneans who have lost their lives to this debilitating situation just in the last week. In our last Press Release, following the death of Dr. Sheikh Humarr Khan, the Party called on Government to proclaim a State of Public Health Emergency and to make this manifest in the allocation of resources and efforts to combat this scourge. The Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) reiterated its unwavering commitment to Governments efforts to contain the spread of the disease. We implored all Sierra Leoneans to desist from doing anything that distracts from this national objective. The SLPP applauds President Ernest Bai Koromas decision to declare the looming crisis as an emergency and for allocating additional resources to the efforts. The party also recognizes the renewed efforts of Government to deal with the situation. On the same token, we welcome the Governments inclusion of 3 (three) political party representatives on the Presidential Task Force. The SLPP lauds the efforts of the Doctors without Borders (MFS) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) for standing with us throughout this critical period. It is evident by now that the Ebola outbreak is a threat not only to West Africa but to the global community at large. We therefore call on the International Community to do more to stem the spread of the virus in the country and in neighboring countries. In this regard we also welcome President Obamas impressive commitment to work earnestly and assiduously with the Governments of Liberia and Sierra Leone and the World Health Organization (WHO) in containing the outbreak of this deadly virus which continues to devastate communities in our sub - region. In the same vein we commend the efforts of the British Department for International Development (DfID) in providing much needed resources for our continued fight to halt the spread of this infection. We thank the Chinese government for our continued friendship and for standing by us in these desperate times. We warmly appreciate the decision of the Canadian government to make some experimental vaccines available to our nations to help our peoples. In a letter addressed to the US Charged`daffaires on August 11, 2014, the party pleaded with her to make a humanitarian representation on behalf of our country to her government for our healthcare workers, especially Dr. Cole, to be given the experimental Zmapp drug. Unfortunately he died before we could get a response. We will continue to plead, now publicly, with the US Charged` daffaires to work with the great United States to salvage our despicable situation. We call on Government to continue to do more to protect our health workers by providing much needed protection equipment and other resources to make their jobs safer. We implore the public to fully cooperate with the protocols that the Task Force has set in place to contain the spread of this disease. God Bless Sierra Leone!!! God Bless Sierra Leoneans!!! One Country, One People!!! Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie National Secretary General UNITY HOUSE, 15 WALLACE JOHNSON STREET, FREETOWN.
