Folks are asking me why I am leaving jazz, after 20 years in the business with records that have hit the charts... I just got another email from a long time fan about this today.... and I tell them I am NOT LEAVING JAZZ. I am STILL singing jazz, in fact I will be at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago at the end of the month with Willie Pickens and Ari Brown, it doesnt get any jazzier than that! Sheesh... one fan told me that hed never come to another one of my shows because he HATES country, but were not recording a country album. I have all the same jazz musicians on this new record that Ive had on my popular jazz recordings, and they all love this stuff and are having a blast with it too... they were totally psyched when I first brought the project to them. I only want to branch out and try different things with my voice, I have been a big fan of singers like Kay Starr and Patsy Cline for years, and have sung along with their records in secret... but now that Im getting a little older and wiser, I dont worry so much about what folks think. I really ENJOY singing these tunes, and doing the vocal techniques that these singers employ, its so much FUN! These tunes are short, sweet ditties with the craziest vocal turns and swings and swoops... and they are SUCH A PLEASURE to sing, they are like a roller coaster for my vocal cords :p I am not a huge fan of contemporary country pop, but the old stuff is just a hoot, and I hope you will all enjoy my foray into western retro swing because me and the band are having a blast recording these tunes, and I hope you have as much fun with them as we do.
