Folks seem to expend a great deal of energy rightfully criticizing the police for warrantless searches and warrantless arrests - recommending that people refuse to answer the door and demand a warrant if cops come to their home asking questions or checking on them. Still others now criticize cops for not doing so in cases that go very bad later. All while suggesting from the comfort of their armchair, that the better solution is to give police officers the power to forcibly take people from their homes and have them committed against their will without warrant and based solely upon subjectively relayed information and/or the opinion of a street level police officer instead of a trained mental health official or direct family member who is responsible for doing so - even after it is known that mental health officials and family members have already assessed the person and did not commit them to begin with.
