Millions of these animals are shot in Queensland every year and left to rot on the ground. My suggestion outraged a few carrot munchers from Teneriffe, but provided inspiration for others. Hervey Bay Aboriginal elder Edwin McKenzie tells me he has started the indigenous Meat Corporation to supply roo meat processed at Surat, 450km west of Brisbane. He is supplying six Aboriginal communities in Queensland and is expanding into the restaurant trade. Since my story, McKenzie has hooked up with pig trappers Mark Gladwin and Sam Leo in far north Queensland to process pigs at Seisia abattoir on the tip of Cape York. Gladwin and Leo’s firm RESET Initiative uses satellite and wifi technology, hidden cameras and drones to monitor and trap pigs. McKenzie is also investigating a possible trade in camel meat. Meanwhile, hunter Andrew Jackson has also contacted Reset. He and his brother have a mobile abattoir capable of processing up to 300 goats, pigs or deer a day and they are eyeing domestic and export markets.
