Following on from that What DJs do these days video I have come to the conclusion that the issue of ego in dance music, often suffered by its creaters and DJs, would be almost totally solved - and a LOT of money saved by promoters - if stage heights were limited to 50cm or less. Id love to play more gigs on lower stages, its a much better connection with the audience - more eye contact and a greater sense of unity - and refocuses things on the music rather than on the personality. Its a more honest experience for both performer and audience; you cant hide it, or fake it, if people can see what youre doing. High stages encourage laziness and charlatanism, and as a physical representation of how people get put on pedestals, serve to reinforce heirarchy and the integrity-destroying aspects of fame. Especially in psytrance - that genre of dance music supposedly dedicated to creating a better world without the failings of this one - being performed to from high stages is pretty much the antithesis of the psychedelic experience. Incidentally, that video has just been removed thanks to a copyright claim by Feisar Music; one wonders if it would still be there if it showed Aoki et al performing legitimate feats of musical skill, rather than them pretending.
