Following reports of a vehicle broken into at the Star Athletic Club, a suspect and vehicle were identified, though the suspects name was unknown. The suspects photo and vehicle were posted on our Facebook page. On Tuesday night, one of the victims of a car break in and subsequent use of their credit card, spotted a vehicle being driven by a male, both matching the descriptions in that case. The victim called dispatch in an attempt to get a sheriffs deputy to stop the vehicle but MCSO cars were not close. The information was given to Fort Morgan officers who located the suspect vehicle in the 700 Blk. of E Platte Avenue in Fort Morgan. The male driver ran from the vehicle and was chased by Fort Morgan PD officers, however the victim was able to tackle the suspect and hold him for the officers. The suspect gave officers a fictitious name however he was subsequently identified as Alexander Welsh, age 33. Welsh was found to be wanted on five outstanding warrants from Weld, Larimer and Douglas Counties for escape, theft and drug charges. Search warrants were obtained for Welshs Tahoe and motel room where Identification, credit cards and stolen property (both from the broken into vehicles and from purchases made with the stolen credit cards) were recovered from several local cases. Investigation continues by sheriffs investigators and Fort Morgan PD detectives and once those investigations are complete, a number of charges relating to these cases is expected. Since Welsh was only held initially on the out of county warrants, he was transported by MCSO to Weld County on Thursday to face their charges. While in Greeley, Welsh was able to open a door on the transport vehicle and attempted to escape. However once outside the vehicle, he stopped when confronted by the deputy and was on to the Weld County Jail without further incident. Attempted escape charges are expected to be added in Weld County for that incident as well. These cases should serve as a reminder to people to not only lock up their vehicles, but to also either secure valuables (purses, wallets, electronics, etc) in the trunk, or at least hide them so they are not readily visible from outside the vehicle. Welshs charges had earned him a place on the Weld County Sheriffs Most Wanted list (weldsheriff/WarrantsFugitivesMissingPersons/). And he was actually the second person arrested that day in Fort Morgan who was also on that list. Jason Daniel Graham, age 26, was arrested by deputies and FMPD officers in the 100 Blk of S Deuel Street just minutes before Welsh was arrested. Graham was wanted for felony escape and parole violation relating to an aggravated robbery conviction. He was turned over to Weld County authorities also on Thursday. Anyone who might have information relating to the car break-ins and/or use of stolen credit cards should call the sheriffs office at 970-867-2461. If you were the victim of one of these crimes, please contact the law enforcement agency you reported the crime to.
