Following the death of his son Martin, Adrian Strauss is campaigning for a Community Psychiatric Nurse to be attached to each GP surgery. What do you think? Specifically he is calling for: • improved access to specialist services in hospital • improved review of prescribed medicines and in-service training for GPs • psychiatric nurses working directly to their GPs providing wrap around proactive care He says, A large General Practice typically handles a budget of almost £2m. It currently manages locally a national campaign screening ‘poo’ samples from all 59-70 year olds; it offers a holistic care plan to all diabetes patients; and it is working hard to improve the speed of detection of many forms of cancer. A Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) serving a large Practice would cost less than £40,000. He concludes that parity of care between mental and physical health services should start with our GPs.
