Following the success of the single Whats Going On in the spring of 1971, the first Motown concept album bearing the same name was released that summer. Critically acclaimed, the album produced 2 more singles that year, Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), and Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler). The single was produced in the winter of 1970-71, and was released in January. Detroit Lions running back Mel Farr and safety Lem Barney sang and rapped backing vocals. They became friends with Marvin Gaye when he unsuccessfully tried out for the team in 1970. The Tamla single was re-mixed for release on the album. I prefer the more spirited single version. The drums were buried on the laid-back album mix, and the single release overall is more lively. Most oldies stations played and still play the album version. Be sure to catch the false ending.
