Food Security: US Set To Partner With Nigeria As Diplomat Visits TUNS Farms On Assessment By Timothy Agbor, Osogbo The United States of America Agric Attache, Mr Selfart Kurt has said that his country will collaborate with Nigeria in the area of food security. Kurt said this on Friday, 7th November, 2014 during a scheduled visit to TUNS Farms to gather information on the company production lines as part of United States of America’s agriculture policy to ensure food security and safety for the people of Nigeria. In a chat with journalists, Kurt said the purpose of his visit to the company is to “collect, analyse and act on information on agriculture, agric business, food security and food safety”. He stated further that: “You know my country and Nigeria share the same agriculture practices. Nigeria wants higher standard and we also want higher standard in agric practice, so, in order to ensure maximum food security and safety, we are here to exchange ideas with Tuns Farms”. Kurt added that the information gathered will assist in drafting food security law which he said his government and Nigeria government will collaborate together to enact. This according to him will bring about safety of food consumption for all and sundry. Earlier in his welcome address ,the Managing Director of the Farm, Mr Olalekan Badmus commended the US diplomat for the visit to the company. He said his company was incorporated about 30 years ago and among top three producers of broiler meat in Nigeria. He added that with over three decades of continuous development and improvement in all areas of integrated operations leading to a perfection of the art and science of producing safe and quality broiler meat and others chicken derivatives. Badmus lamented the activities of the smugglers of the poultry products from the neighboring countries who he said is killing the business and charges the government to urgently address the situation. On product safety, he said: “we are well aware of the importance of the health and well being of our customers,therefore, each of our products are produced to the highest quality standards. In the last three years, we have undergone four different audits in food safety and quality system which were all passed. In all recognition of this feat, ‘Can Do’ awards were presented to us by Yum Restaurants International (YRI).” The highly elated diplomat who was later taken round the facilities production lines of the company which cut across integrated poultry farm: breeder farm, hatchery, further processing, life bird and processing plant said “This is nice. This is impressive”.
