Food & Spirits Review Ryan’s Wake 403 River Street Troy, New York 518-270-9253 The live music played as I walked up the steps of the rear entrance. The back balcony deck was packed with people; I certainly wasn’t going to find a seat there so I walked inside and sat at the bar. As I looked around I was taking mental notes of my usual and everything was getting high marks. I sat on a bench stool and ordered a Long Island Iced Tea; straight up – that means no ice. The bartender showed me a few glasses, one being a martini glass and told me without ice that would be the amount of the drink I would get. That was the only part of the visit that I did not like. I’ve frequented many places who serve this very drink in pints. I ordered my drink, with ice so that it would be cold. I don’t like ice in my drinks because the water dilutes whatever is in the glass. If I’m paying $9 for a drink I want the full effect of it, not just a little. My second drink was a Watermelon Martini. That was so delicious! There are many versions of the drink that one can make of it. Some use actual puree of the watermelon to make the drink. This particular one was not made that way. I still enjoyed it all the same; but I have to say the flavor between having one made with watermelon puree and without it is highly noticeable. Both of my drinks were wonderful. I did not feel that they were “watered down” in any way. They were cold, freshly made as in not coming from a pre-mixture; those things are terrible! If you own a bar and have that in your stock you’re not serving spirits, you’re serving crap! That was thankfully not the case at Ryan’s Wake. The food I ordered was Mexican Fries. My stool sat directly next to the kitchen which I noticed was remarkably clean given that the audience outside was packed. I love it when a restaurant can keep their work space clean as they work. I hate a messy kitchen myself when I do cook and it’s always nice to see that other people; even businesses follow that same line of thought. The whole place was immaculately clean. I was able to watch the cook make my meal the whole time; that actually put a smile on my face. When my Mexican Fries were placed before me I was freaking out over how much was in the serving dish. Then there was the smell of the hot peppers mixed with cheese and black olives. I took my time and ate the whole thing. The owner came by and I gave him a thumbs up as I was eating. He was delighted. I sipped on my Watermelon Martini as I ate; I had drunk my Long Island long before the meal came to me. For me, those things go down way to quickly!! The two people who helped serve me were very polite and very professional. It’s always nice to meet people who take pride in their work and themselves. It shows quite clearly to the customer. I don’t remember their names but they were fantastic. This was my first time visiting Ryan’s Wake. The only reason I found myself going there was because there were no parking spots open for Bombers. When I found a parking spot I thought to myself that it was time to try some place new. I am so glad that I did. This place is remarkable. If you find yourself traveling in Troy, New York you have to take a look at the eateries that are available. There’s a lot to choose from; and this one comes highly recommended. Thank you to everyone at Ryan’s Wake who made my experience there a positive and happy one. Jason Gagnon Freelance Digital Media, Ltd
