Food for Thought Friday: This morning, I am preoccupied with thoughts about silence and the different ways we use it and why in fact we do use it. I for one have always been an individual whom is very comfortable with silence, so much so that I sometimes neglect to recognize it as an absence of words, but rather a natural way of being. Through silence we can communicate a great deal, both to ourselves and to others. Even as one Proverb states, Silence is sometimes the answer. Yet, this week during a discussion with a colleague, the subject of silence had a much different connotation. The question arose of how in fact we use it - Do we use it passive-aggressively?; Do we use it as a form of abuse?; Do we crave it in order to center ourselves?; Do we possibly have this innate characteristic to resort to it in times of confusion? Whats the initial feeling you receive when hearing the word silence - is it positive or negative? How do you use silence in your life? How long can you remain silent in the company of another person and be comfortable with the stillness - 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 5 minutes? I invite you to consider this topic; Im curious to hear what comes up for you.
