Food for thought? A small group of modern conservatives who wish to fight the Federal government - and conjure up for themselves romantic notions of small, local communities able to completely govern, sustain, and defend themselves - set themselves in direct defiance of the very conditions which allow them the liberty and context to dream up such a fantastical and ahistorical utopia. In fact, it is the very might, economic & military (for the two are inseparable) of these United States - and their combined & focused power as projected by the Federal government that provides a security so complete and so profound that those who live under it are totally unaware of the chaos that reigns beyond the borders of this land...and that might, but for the combined power of the United States, yet be found here. While these self-appointed patriots beat their chests and yell about their rights and the cause of liberty, they are willfully ignorant that the power which they seek to pull down is the very power by which their liberty is secured in a dangerous world. God did not endow Virginia with special liberties. He did not single out Massachusetts as a beacon of freedom for all mankind. No, he assigned that humbling mission to the entire nation -- the Union, established under the Constitution and redeemed from folly by the blood of a Civil War. It may be that those who now advocate the dissolution of this Union, or rebellion against its government (however imperfect it may be), are abdicating their responsibilities to the Founders, this nation, and its God -- and will inevitably surrender their claim to the liberties that attend these responsibilities.
