Food for thought.... Have a look at what Wilmas grade 2 class is doing over at the heap of soil deposited on the field. Driftwood, fir cones, rocks and worms have become the focus of these kids play. Though Id be comfortable with perhaps a few more rules than what the NZ principal interviewed embraces, I think his desire to embrace challenge and encourage kids to take risks is based on some pretty insightful and sound research. Our new playground will have a wonderful selection of both: traditional play structures AND natural elements that encourages them to interact with their environment. CANT WAIT TO GET BUILDING!!
