Food for thought: I picked up my son Joe from the airport last - TopicsExpress

Food for thought: I picked up my son Joe from the airport last night. He and his college baseball teammates went to Las Vegas for a few days. He talked about all the interesting people he saw and spoke to. He mentioned the large amount of homeless he saw. It brought up the subject of our family serving food this Thanksgiving. It is a tradition we started when our children were small. They continue it every year wherever they are. In the back seat my daughter said What happens during the rest of the year? I asked her to explain. She said every November and December food bins are out to collect food. Most missions and churches have food for anyone who needs it. Thanksgiving meals are served. Toys are donated for children. It is the season of giving. So what about the other months. Are they not important. Are people not still hungry or need help. She was really quite upset. We were silent for awhile as we all thought about what she had said. Everyones heart opens up during the holiday season with care and concern. How does one keep that holiday spirit of giving last for all the other months? It will be our families challenge this year. To keep the holiday spirit of giving alive when the collection bins are gone, the decorations packed away and meals are no longer served. I hope I did not offend anyone. I know many have things planned the next few months. Her question and tears made me realize she has thought about this for awhile. Her heart is gold but still young and fragile. Thank you for reading.
