Food for thought in the khidmat of my barelwi brothers & sisters. Without going into technicalities, I would like ask you a question; What was the lifestyle of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi wasallam? Would he enjoy cakes, lassees, biryanees and halwaas? Or would he suffice with minimum provisions? Would he ever indulge in various delicacies? We can bring textual evidences of him praising vinegar, honey, meat, milk etc. However, we should always keep his Sunnah before our eyes, especially in this day & age when the wahabis pick & choose words of hadith which suit them rather than looking at the normal practice of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. This reminds me of a beautiful advice of sayyiduna Ali karramallahu wajhahu. When he sent Abdullah Ibn Abbas radiallahu anhuma to talk to the khawaarij, he instructed Ibn Abbas to stress on the Sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. He encouraged him to avoid using texts from Quran and Hadith, because words can be interpreted in many ways. He told him to give them daleel from the Sunnah. Abdullah Ibn Abbas spoke to them. They said Quran says Hukm is for Allah alone, and Ali has agreed to the hukm of two arbitrators, so he has gone against the Quran, thus he is a kafir Abdullah Ibn Abbas replied that Rasulullah himself made a truce with the mushrikeen, in the treaty of Hudaybiyyah, so did he become a kafir (naoozu billah) by agreeing to the proposals of the arbitrators from the mushrikeen side? Why did he not wait for the hukm of Allah? So, we should always base our lives on the Sunnah of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. It was never his Sunnah to spend a luxurious lifestyle. He was the most simple person we could ever think of. A lady came to visit him. She began to tremble with awe in spite of the simplicity of his clothes & his posture. He said Calm down, take it easy, for I am the son of a woman who used to eat dried meat (Shamalie Tirmizi) Aisha Radiallahu anhas hadith is famous about spending many days and weeks without being able to light the stove, because there was nothing in the house to cook. They would survive on dates and water. Ask yourselves if he sallallahu alayhi wasallam was among us today, would he approve the birthday cakes of his meelad sharif? Would he approve the other strings attached to it in todays society? The marches, the noise, and the disturbance to the other communities? He has fixed two Eids for us. Would approve the addition of a third one in the form of Eid miladunnabi? Would it not be better to spend that amount of wealth in feeding the poor people of Syria and Palestine? You could then gift the sawab of that Sadaqah to Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam. It will definitely reach him and he will be happy with you and he will pray for you. Another point is tashabbuh, emulating, copying. He sallallahu alayhi wasallam hated copying. He once saw a Sahabi carrying a Persian styled bow. He said throw it away and carry this type of Arabian bow When sitting down to eat, he would sit like a slave. He would eat swiftly and busy himself with more pressing engagements. Once sahaba were passing by a place where there was a big tree named Zaatu Anwaat. The idolaters would hang their swords on that tree. Sahaba asked Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam if they could have their own Zaatu Anwaat, like that of the mushrikeen. He replied Subhanallah! This is exactly what the people of Musa said to Musa alayhissalam اجعل لنا الها كما لهم آلهة Design a deity for us just as they have deities, then he added You shall surely follow the ways of those before you, handspan by handspan, and yard by yard, to the extent that if they were to force their way into the hole of an iguana, you will follow suit. They asked Do you mean the Jews & the Christians? He replied Who else? So we should try our best to avoid emulating other cultures. Also, one thing leads to another and thats why some people who cut Miladunnabi cakes go on to cutting Christmas cakes as well. Another thing to note is that our love for Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) is proven by strictly following his example, not by borrowing ideas from others and trying to make them part of Islam. If we start borrowing things from others, are we not then saying that the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam is incomplete? May Allah give us some understanding and help us to follow the Sunnah properly. Ameen
