Food is the topic of the day. Jim and I went to the weekly Farmers - TopicsExpress

Food is the topic of the day. Jim and I went to the weekly Farmers Market early this morning to get some local(ish) fresh produce. I am learning about the variety of oranges, grapefruit and avocados--a variety that we dont see at home. It makes me realize how privileged we are to get food grown so far away, a privilege that also costs in terms of diversity, flavour and transport. From the Farmers Market we went to St Barnabas Episcopal Church to volunteer at the monthly Food Bank. A truck brings food for distribution from San Diego and Ernie, the primary organizer, helps the volunteers set up. Ernie (see the guy in the red shirt) has recently retired so he can give his time to this and other ministries; he and his wife also run a small orphanage across the border in Mexico. With Ernies direction we helped set up and distribute food to a wide range of clients. Obvious and not-so-obvious need in the midst of abundance and beauty. As Ernie said in the prayer he led with the volunteers (some of whom are also clients), Thank you God for your many blessings, including the blessing to serve you in this way. Heres some photos of food and food-giving.
