Food or drink for thought Think about how much time you’ve spent and spend taking direct action with ingredient removal or addition to the food you eat and the drinks you consume vs. your thought attentiveness analysis, and consideration. Remember Nestle Quick? I remember spending legions of time trying to find my ideal merger-- Nestle Quick mix and milk or water. Ingredient adjustments and focus were employed until the concoction rang my bell--xanadu! The landscape for Tang (orange flavor powered madness) was the same--reams of time and focus until the blend was a frenzy of delight. Let’s also holiday to an example of Lucky Charms or Captain Crunch with crunch berries. Many of us would assassinate the toasted oats, sweetened corn and oat biscuits until the balance was lopsided into a gratifying bowl of multi colored marshmallow shapes and delicious fruit flavored berry profiles. In this moment, we are not going to settle or accept until the taste is true, complete, and Shangri-la! We know what we want and will not accept anything else until we have it correct. The iron shoe is going to encircle the stake. We’re precise with our Tang, Quick, Kool-Aid, coffee, Lucky Charms, steak, and Captain Crunch with crunch berries. We do not waver and that’s that! The same determination and conviction that rapper Flavor Flav “yea boy!” demands as he fries drumsticks in any of his mismanaged and eventually evicted from Chicken and rib stands. The above are genuine examples of liquidating and abolishing the less desirable in order to seduce the desirable. This is a strong attraction; it sure ain’t puppy love. You may think these examples and comparisons are weak, foolish, and irresponsible but reconsider. Most of us allow defeating, demeaning and damaging thoughts and even support our own demise with the thoughts we do and don’t entertain. My experience in talking with many athletes and most people in general who have a little awareness, admit how their thoughts are often and quickly fraudulent. No one deceives scams, over-charges, underestimates, and victimizes us more than we do to ourselves. You know it! I know it! Most of us give immediate attention and effort to our taste but not to our thoughts. We immediately address not enough or too much Quick but permit mental intruders and assassins who wonder freely and damage our attitude, outlook, health and quality of life. We lock the doors to our home, car, and possessions. We post signs, and have alarms and cameras installed but do very little with the mental invaders that taint the direction, quality, expectations and relationships in our lives. Our thoughts are basically our mood, feeling and flavor of our lives. Depending on what we want out of life, we must take full-responsibility and not delay and remain careless and blind. Let’s be prompt in the attention to our thoughts, attitude, and outlook. I mean, if we’re going to be here (on earth) anyway, we might as well strive for our condition to be upbeat, grateful, hopeful, and outstanding. We don’t have to be perfect. If we did, we’re all wiped out. So, breathe easy, collect and compose you self; this is not easy, so take it easy and don’t fight with your thoughts. We come together much better when we’re calm, wave less and undisturbed. What about when we’re in the middle of turmoil, chaos, fatigue, and one of life’s real storms? Slow your breathing down and you’ll un-ruffle. The situation is not catastrophic and if it is, then it definitely requires you to remain right sized, level headed, and at ease. If we can learn to manage our mind, we can manage whatever comes our way. Regardless if we’re prepared, various disturbances are coming our way. We can manage, overcome, deal, and even excel in-spite. Advanced food but thought? You may pay attention to what you eat and drink, train your body but do little to nothing to cultivate awareness and management of your thoughts that inevitably hold a lot more weight – no pun intended- than any of your other actions or behaviors. You may think being health conscious with the food and drink and working your body with cardio, resistance-training, cross-training is health enough. You have a great point and case, but now it’s time to get off Gilligan’s Island. Everything in our lives comes back to our thoughts, expectations, attitude, internal discipline and conversation. We can do everything right, but if we don’t have quality mindset, we will never reach our potential or have the attitude, gratefulness, outlook, and results that we can with it mental willingness, discipline, awareness and optimism. With all of this food for thought, how about we consider and begin to employ the same standards, adjustment, and attention to our self—talk that we do to Quick, Crunch Berries and Lucky Charms.
