Foodies: What do you think of this womans situation? Do you - TopicsExpress

Foodies: What do you think of this womans situation? Do you agree/disagree? What suggestions would you give her (and others) to eat real food on a tight budget? Heres my take: There are many junk foods that are less expensive than fresh fruits, veggies, and meats because theyre made with ingredients that are subsidized by the government (like corn) and chock full of cheap sugar and sodium to make them taste better. Theyre also readily available, and marketed from every angle. The knowledge to cook, especially from scratch, has been declining in our country for years. People are relying more and more on pre-packaged foods for convenience and then passing these habits onto their children. Cooking requires education. In my experience, it is not given priority in our schooling, so that places the burden on parents. If theyre not raised in a family where home cooked meals are a norm, or taught by a role model how to do it themselves, what will they rely on in the future? Most likely, junk food and takeout. What can we do about this? Spread your cooking skills far and wide. Support local and national representatives in the government who care about food education. Find a friend or a neighbor who doesnt cook much, and invite them to dinner. Show them how simple it is to cook a basic meal. Also, it really pisses me off when I come across recipes on the internet with comments like this is so simple. Why does it even require a recipe? EVERYONE has to learn how to boil water, or scramble an egg, or use an oven. No one is born with this knowledge. Those kind of comments only impede someone who is beginning their journey.
