Foot Wear I often get questions about foot wear: What are the best shoes for...? What brand do you recommend? How often should I change my shoes? My standard answer is: It depends! If you are doing a lot of running / jogging, you want a shoe that is light weight and more bend in the sole while offering ample cushioning and support. Make sure you get something a little longer in the toe to accommodate your foot strike. If you are doing more strength training I tend to go for a more solid support type of shoe. I have even used court shoes to do strength training as I enjoyed their stability and grip. When doing more multi- sport - lateral action I like something more in the middle of the two that I have mentioned. I tend to look for a shoe that has more lateral vinyl support versus netting as I have lax ankles. As for how often I change my shoes, probably every 3 months or when I feel they have lost stability / support and I have about three or four pairs on the go at a time. I have outside shoes for walking the dogs every day, moderate activity shoes for a little more physical activity (soccer coaching, light jogging etc.) and indoor strength training shoes, as well as indoor cardio shoes. As for the brands I switch them up ranging from Saucony, to Nike, Asics, Adiddas. I know what I like in feel and what I need for the specific activity and just try different models that are on sale. I would recommend that you go to a specialty store where the staff arent just sales reps but trained gait analysis experts. They will educate you (If you ask enough questions!) in what you need and how to recognize it. That information will last a lifetime! I still remember the lady at the Running Room who correctly told me about my physical activity / injury past after watching me walk for approximately 1 minute! :) If you have old faithful runners you have been using for everything under the sun for years now, throw them out or retire them to gardening tasks only! Invest in your footwear as it will help you extend your physical activity mileage in the long-run (Pardon the pun!) Walk comfortably :)
