Foot in Mouth. Oh. My. God. Setting: outside Brown Sugar Kitchen in very marginal West Oakland hood. My friend, Petra Johnson, a woman of color, had tied her adorable little dark-furred mutt to a post outside and checked on her several times during our breakfast. When we came out, the dog was lying spread-eagled, begging tummy rubs of random passersby. Without a THOUGHT, I greeted the dog by saying, Hello, you little black slut. A loud burst of laughter came from a young black man about 3 feet away, standing there w his mother. I glanced over, realized what Id just said, and I, too, howled with laughter...and finally mumbled a weak apology. The dude was still laughing and said, I dont care, I dont care. THAT was FUNNY! ...whew...
