Football: Defense is the key for Garden Grove On Sept. 26, Garden Grove raced out to a touchdown advantage early in its nonleague game against Katella. The Knights responded with a a 30-yard Miguel Galindo field goal. That was the last time Katella or anybody else has scored on the Argonauts defense, a string of 19 consecutive scoreless quarters and four straight shutouts. The stingy defense has pushed Garden Grove to an 8-0 record overall with a 3-0 record in the Garden Grove League, where the Argounauts sit atop the standings. The latest domination by the Argonauts was a 49-0 triumph against second-place Los Amigos. The closest margin of victory in the shutout streak was 42 points, which means a lot of non-starters have helped the keep the scoreless run alive. The backups and third-string guys are taking pride in making sure they tackle and run to the football, Garden Grove coach Willy Puga said. Were substituting pretty quick on defense, so its a lot of backups in the third and fourth quarter. Its a pride thing now with anybody playing defense. Our starters are playing great defense, its probably the best Ive been around ever. Bryan Quexel is the ring leader on defense as he has led the team in tackles the past two seasons. He is joined at inside linebacker by Danny OCampo, and they get help in the front seven from defensive end Christian Rodriguez. Puga led the Argonauts to a 13-1 record in 2010, a season which ended with Garden Grove hoisting a CIF-SS Southern Division championship, but now the coach is challeneging this years team to accomplish more than that. Ive been preaching that to them, Puga said. There was a blemish on the record in the preseason. So Ive been preaching to these guys, Look, you can be the best ever by running the table. So weve got a long way to go. ocvarsity/ocvarsity/garden-69603-grove-key.html
