For 35 years Ive been a blissfully devoted blissful Meryl Streep Fan; but Im no fanatic - about her nor any of my heroes/heroines. Shes The Greatest but still.... In the main, Meryls performances have been much better than the films in which shes appeared. I adored AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY on stage. Some material, however, just doesnt translate well to the screen. Duh! (Thats why the Kazan Streetcar and the Nichols Angels films were/are so revelatory - though in the case of Angels, still inferior to seeing it on Bwy.) Ive feared/assumed that with August, in the move from stage to screen - especially with the cutting and casting - it would just come off as old fashioned, grim, slight, self-important, exhaustingly cacophonous, insufficiently exuberant Oscar-chasing melodrama. (Verbose much, Dan?) With Julia Roberts instead of Amy Morton! Ive been inclined to make this film my first Big Meryl Film Performnce I wasnt running to; now, in reading my trusted A.O.Scotts review, coupled with other reviews and comments from friends whove seen it, Im happy to just wait for this on DVD - again, as a huge Meryl Lover, highly uncharacteristic for me. Theres just waaaay too many great movies right now. I prefer to cherish my memories of seeing this on stage. But next year when INTO THE WOODS comes out, I dont think Ill be able to maintain such restraint. nytimes/2013/12/27/movies/august-osage-county-with-meryl-streep-and-julia-roberts.html?ref=arts&_r=0 ‘August: Osage County,’ With Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts nytimes The word “acting” is inadequate for what the cast of “August: Osage County” is doing. It’s more of a thespian cage match.
