For 45th year, U.S. citizens defy travel ban to Cuba Buffalo News, August 3, 2014 A brigade of citizens who defied a travel ban to Cuba returned to U.S. soil on Sunday by marching from Fort Erie, Ont., across the Peace Bridge and into Buffalo. The group of 22 members of the Venceremos Brigade spent two weeks in Cuba, delivering more than 1,000 pounds of material aid to the island nation, working on civic projects and touring hospitals, factories and important cultural and historical sites. The U.S. government has maintained travel and trade restrictions on Cuba for more than four decades, although those restrictions have loosened in recent years under President Barack Obama.
