For Americans: bios of the slain cartoonists and writers. They are all household names in France. Most of the nation grew up reading these folks. We have nothing like Charlie Hebdo here. Imagine a cross between the 1970s Mad magazine and National Lampoon. Hebdo isnt for kids, but its lowbrow and confrontation ally tasteless without apology. Hebdo is an institution in comix crazy France. You see it for sale everywhere, newsstands, train stations, bookstores, etc. Despite its provocative reputation, no one would call it cutting edge. Most comix folks consider it a throwback. Theyre fond of it, but feel comix have moved beyond the big-nose, thumb-in-the-eye Hebdo style. But no one ever doubted the courage of the staff. They paid heavily for that courage. The magazine, with a circulation of 50,000, has been threatened for years by Islamists. Its office was a firebombed in 2011. French authorities often criticized the magazine for being purposefully confrontational, especially after the earlier Danish cartoon Fatwa. Hebdo was under armed police protection. The first two victims slain were the cops at the front door.
