For Ash Wednesday: Allergris Miserere Mei, Deus (Have Mercy on me, O God). For much of the 17th and 18th centuries, this stunning piece of music was jealously guarded by the Roman Catholic authorities who only permitted the piece to be performed within the confines of the Vatican. Writing it down or performing it outside was punishable by excommunication. The music escaped the Vatican when WA Mozart heard it on a visit to Rome. Risking excommunication, Mozart wrote down the music by memory and had it published in 1771. Once it was published, the ban was lifted. Rather than excommunicating Mozart, Pope Clement XIV praised Mozarts feat of musical genius. Today, this music is performed all over the world. youtu.be/36Y_ztEW1NE
