For Banned Books Week, Brown Administration Officials Read From Their Favorite Banned Books To draw attention to the harms of censorship and celebrate the importance of free speech, the California State Library is hosting an virtual read-out of banned books during Banned Books Week, September 22 through September 27. Each day a new video will be posted of an appointee from Governor Brown’s administration reading from a book that has been banned or challenged. Starting off the week, State Librarian Greg Lucas read a selection from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Natural Resources Secretary John Laird, who hails from Santa Cruz in “Steinbeck Country,” chose Of Mice and Men. The videos can be viewed on the State Library’s YouTube page. https://youtube/user/CSLmultimedia/videos Wednesday afternoon the Secretary of the Department of Food and Agriculture, Karen Ross, reads from The Grapes of Wrath. Thursday’s read-out of Beloved will be by Anna Caballero, Secretary of Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency. On Friday, Marybel Batjer, Secretary of Government Operations, will read from To Kill a Mockingbird. In addition, a selection of frequently banned books are on display in Gillis Hall, the library’s reading room on the third floor of the Library and Courts Building at 914 Capitol Mall in Sacramento.
