For Beatles fanatics- Just got this very cool e-mail from my friend Tom Daly: This is a remix and restoration I did on The Beatles’ “I am the Walrus.” As was pointed out in the liner notes to Capitol’s “Rarities” US release, every stereo issue of the song switches from true stereo to fake stereo at 2:00 into it. Not anymore! It seems the reason that happened was that the overdubs were not on the multitrack session tape but were dubbed-in during the mix to mono. Rather than do the overdubs again for the stereo mix, the electronic stereo alteration of the mono mix was just spliced onto the stereo mix of the first 2:00. The BBC performance of “King Lear” heard at the end of the song wasn’t in stereo anyway, but was panned from left to right and back again. The guys at EMI remixed the basic tracks and I added the overdubs where they belonged, as well as the “King Lear” segment. Attached is “I am the Walrus” in true stereo from start to finish will all overdubs and the “King Lear” excerpt as was found on the original stereo mix. I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, feel free to pass it along! bigmattress/images/Beatles_Walrus.mp3
