For Christmas, I would like suggest a self-imposed ban two dumb modes of argument: 1. The song/artist/album sold well, and therefore it must be good. (Or the inverse). We can call this the Milli Vanilli / Velvet Underground rule. And 2. The can you write a good song as someone rule. (In other words: You say you hate Drive My Care. Can you write as good a song?) We can call this the Roger Ebert rule. When I have my students write papers on aesthetic theory, these logical fallacies are signs of bad analysis. Lets raise the bar here and stop these two dumb strategies. They are BOTH IDIOTIC. STOP!!! Thanks. Happy Holidays.
