For Christmas, I would like suggest a self-imposed ban two dumb modes of argument: 1. The song/artist/album sold well, and therefore it must be good. (Or the inverse). We can call this the Milli Vanilli / Velvet Underground rule. And 2. The can you write a good song as someone rule. (In other words: You say you hate Drive My Care. Can you write as good a song?) We can call this the Roger Ebert rule. When I have my students write papers on aesthetic theory, these logical fallacies are signs of bad analysis.
