For Earth Day april 22 - Heres a special request from Council of Canadians that can help us too: Here is the letter we should send our local MPP (Ontario legislator) about two important pieces of legislation that await passage but are being held up: I urge you to pass Bill 6 and Bill 83 before Earth Day on April 22, 2014. All too often Ontario residents face damaging and frivolous lawsuits, known as “strategic lawsuits against public participation,” when they speak out about development proposals or industry activities in their backyards. Passing the Protection of Public Participation Act would protect the democratic rights of all Ontario residents to engage in public processes without fear of retribution. The Great Lakes Protection Act would improve water quality in the Great Lakes, a drinking water source for 80 per cent of Ontarians and home to a fishery worth $7 billion annually. The Great Lakes are in desperate need of stronger protection. One of the greatest freshwater systems on Earth is experiencing larger-than-ever algae blooms, rising concentrations of toxic pollutants, more frequent beach closures, and biological deserts or ‘dead-zones’ in certain areas. Both Acts have broad support and have undergone thorough review. It’s not good enough to hear that MPPs support the Acts, yet see the Acts get stalled indefinitely in the political process. It’s time for elected leaders to put words of support into action and step up to get these critical Acts passed. I urge you to work together to pass these Acts in the legislature by Earth Day.
