"For Facebook, it seems, there are lessons here if indeed the rumors about a news-reader product are true. People who think like you are all over your Facebook feed. This might present a societal problem — we only hear from like-minded types, we stop thinking critically — but it means we’re more likely to trust the links we see on Facebook. Getting the social interaction around those links, though, is what separates Facebook from other curated feeds of news. I can add and drop people off of Twitter at will. I can download Flipboard and have a beautiful customized news reader on my iPad. The conversation makes Facebook special. My friends include lawyers (including conservatives), whose friends can point out subtleties of what was decided I might not have seen in the media. I can share with others what I know about where the law now stands in a way that 140 characters might not convey."
