For I have seen God face to face. Genesis 32:30. Jacob was traveling to meet his brother Esau. He didnt expect this reunion to go well. The night before they met, a man (v.24)visited Jacob, wrestling with him until the break of day. When have you wrestled in the night with a big problem or challenge your facing? Perhaps it was a life-changing decision, such as a new job in another state or making plans to care for an ailing spouse. Why does this type of wrestling match happen so often at night? We lie awake, tossing and turning, our minds spinning as we try to find a solution. Is it coincidence that Jacob wrestled with a man at night? Or does his overnight struggle represent the darkness of the situation in which Jacob found himself? Couldnt God have overpowered Jacob? Or did God let Jacob struggle to teach him a lesson? When Jacob was finally exhausted from the struggle, and only then, was he willing to go and lean on God for help. What can we learn about ourselves and about trusting God from this story? Perhaps we too may have to struggle to the point of exhaustion before we can see God face to face
