For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 5:20) Love exceeds legalism. This is what the scribes and Pharisees lacked … love. That love for the Father … with all that is within you. The love for your neighbor that does him no harm. Their rules and traditions hindered our view of God as caring and loving … while at the same time permitting us to be uncaring and unloving towards our neighbor. As long as they obeyed their rules and laws they thought they were alright … but our Lord Jesus came and exposed their hypocrisy … and the error of self righteousness. Love is God … God is love. He that loves … knows God … and God lives in him. Love abandons self … in favor of the object of love. Love sacrifices … to provide and protect that loved one. Laws are not of love … but of holiness. An avenging angel is sent to confront the offender … to bring him before the seat of Justice … to execute the penalty for crimes … for sin. Love adds a provision for Mercy. Love adds a provision for a Substitute … to accept the penalty in place of the guilty. Holiness demands that the Substitute be PERFECT … in every way … holy … then, and only then … will the Substitutes sacrifice be accepted … the debt of sin be paid … the wrath of God be totally satisfied … the avenger be made into a friend. Thank You, Jesus … for the gift of Eternal Life … the Love of God.
