For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground Isaiah chapter 44 verse 3 Our God is the Sovereign God and when He gives a promise then we can be sure that this will be honored. Prior to the revival on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland which started in late 1949 this promise had been taken hold of. There were two sisters’ Christine and Peggy Smith who were both in their eighties and house-bound due to physical infirmities. This did not deter them from praying into the night for months asking God to act on His promise and move in Sovereign power. The sisters’ had been moved to pray as no young people in the parish were going to church. When God answered the sisters’ pray there was a mighty move of His Spirit which came in convicting power. There were hundreds brought under the conviction of the weight of their sin as they saw themselves about to fall into the flames of hell. God’s presence was everywhere in overwhelming power. Souls were crying out for mercy in both church and on the roadside and in the fields. The most hardened of sinners were broken down and came to receive mercy from the wrath of God. There was nothing of man at work there for when God takes the field man is out of the picture. This was not to bring souls to accept Christ on the sinners own terms. No God is God and whoever we are we have to come to Him on His own terms. When Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6) there is a definiteness and finality about these words and they are to be accepted or if not then those who reject them bring God’s wrath upon themselves. Faith in the perfect and complete work of Christ by faith in Him alone is the sinner’s only justification to receive mercy from God. The only acceptable sacrifice was made in order to appease God’s own wrath in righteous judgement on sin when He sent His only begotten Son to die as the sinner’s substitute.
