Quintana, the Newark Municipal Council, and Acting Director of Neighborhood and Recreational Services Amos Crudup announced today that the City of Newark is offering a five-day Lifeguard Training class, beginning on Sunday, April 6, 2014, continuing through Friday, April 11, 2014, at the Ironbound Aquatic Center, located at 226 Rome Street, in the City’s East Ward. This class is only open to Newark residents aged 15 years and older. Space is limited, so early registration is required. Deadline to register is Wednesday, April 2. The class is sponsored by the Department of Neighborhood and Recreational Services’ Division of Recreation & Cultural Affairs. American Red Cross-certified Lifeguard Instructors will teach the class. There is a $50 non-refundable initial cost due on the first day of class. The classes will take place as follows: • Sunday, April 6: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. • Monday, April 7: 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. • Tuesday, April 8: 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. • Wednesday, April 9: 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. • Thursday, April 10: 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. • Friday, April 11: 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Participants must pre-register by calling the Division at (973) 733-6454 or (973) 715-2856, or calling the Non-Emergency Call Center at (973) 733-4311. “Residents who attain these lifelong skills will gain the unique opportunity to safeguard the lives of others,” Mayor Quintana said. “I urge all of our residents to get involved with this program, and learn these valuable skills because you may save a life.” Participants must present a valid photo ID and proof of Newark residency when they sign up. Participants must be on time and participate in all class sessions. They must also demonstrate competency in all skills/activities, complete final rescue skill scenarios and pass all exams with a minimum grade of 80 percent. The course will require participants to swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, using the front crawl, breast stroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Participants must also tread water for two minutes, using only the legs, complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds, and surface dive, feet or head first to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Participants must bring swimwear, cap, and a towel, to all classes. “Lifeguards are needed at swimming pools, beaches, and camps all across North Jersey,” said Acting Director Crudup. “For teenagers and college students, working as a summer lifeguard can be a way to help pay for school and tuition expenses, while performing valuable and life-saving community service at the same time.” While no jobs are guaranteed for persons who take the class, the Division of Recreation & Cultural Affairs, and other agencies that require lifeguards often hire graduates from these classes during the summer season. The Ironbound Recreation and Aquatic Center offers Newark residents of all ages a wide variety of daily recreation, exercise, and swimming programs. The facility features a multi-purpose exercise room, and an indoor swimming pool, providing residents with access to year-round aquatic classes and recreational programs. It also has the City’s only municipally-operated ice rink, which is also the practice rink and home to the East Side High School Red Raiders Boys’ Ice Hockey Team. In the 2009-2010 season, the team earned the Red Raiders their first appearance in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s State Hockey Playoff since 1985.
