For Immediate Release Friday, November 7th, 2014 Mayor Susan Fennell to Undergo Spinal Surgery BRAMPTON - Mayor Susan Fennell has now been diagnosed for urgent spinal surgery. On Wednesday, October 15th, Mayor Fennell was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital with severe back pain. An Emergency MRI revealed she had two herniated discs. Despite this, Mayor Fennell continued business as usual, doing her job as Mayor and campaigning. However, her condition worsened and on Thursday, October 23rd Mayor Fennell was back in the Emergency Department. Yesterday, her surgeon confirmed urgent surgery is required to avoid nerve damage complications. Surgery will occur as soon as possible. As a result of her condition, Mayor Fennell will not be able to attend upcoming duties and events due to this very painful and dangerous injury. Mayor Fennell regrets she will miss the Team Canada-Team USA Women’s Sledge Hockey Face-off, this year’s Remembrance Day ceremonies, and the Council petitioned Special Council Meeting of November 12 that was called to address the recent Arbitrator’s Report that exonerated her. On Friday, October 24th, at her home, Mayor Fennell held a press conference to address the arbitrator’s report which had exonerated her by exposing the errors of the Deloitte forensic audit report and related Integrity Commissioner’s report. The Deloitte forensic audit cited Mayor Fennell for 266 breaches of city policy. However, Janet Leiper, the respected arbitrator retained by Council to review appeals to the Deloitte audit, found Deloitte had erred and that Mayor Fennell had zero breaches in this current term. Leiper further found that Deloitte forensically reviewed an additional term of office back to 2007 for the Mayor only and found 2 breaches, both relating to city business. Members of Council were only reviewed for 3 years, and were cited for numerous breaches, all personal use of taxpayers money. Mayor Fennell’s term as Mayor ends November 30, 2014. -30-
