For Immediate Release: July 5, 2013 For Further Information Contact: Ron Fossett, 491-1513 City of Lake Charles Brownfields Grant Availability The City of Lake Charles US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Assessments Grants funding has expired. Since the Lake Charles Brownfields Program was first created in 2006, the City and developers have utilized the grant funds to conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) and encourage redevelopment of potential Brownfields sites in the City of Lake Charles. These funds saved the City and developers thousands of dollars. The City will continue to help support Brownfields redevelopment by assisting with access to funding from the State of Louisiana. At this time, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality Brownfields Program has funding to provide Phase I and Phase II ESAs for certain qualified prospective purchasers/developers. Funding is determined on a case-by-case review of the property history, ownership, and potential environmental conditions. According to the US EPA Brownfields Program: “With certain legal exclusions and additions, the term ‘brownfield site’ means real property, the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of which may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant, i.e. abandoned automobile service stations, dry cleaners, vehicle storage yards, and abandoned commercial locations, etc.” Examples of successful brownfields projects are the new City of Lake Charles Transit Customer Service Center located on Ryan Street downtown and the new Lake Charles City Court building under construction on North Mill Street and where the old Sears Automotive Store was located. For more information on the Brownfields Program, contact Ron Fossett, Brownfields Program Manager, 337-491-1513.
