For Immediate Release September 13, 2013 Contact: DNC Press, 202-863-8148 DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement Recognizing Yom Kippur Washington, DC – Friday evening marks the beginning of Yom Kippur. DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement in recognition of that occasion: “Yom Kippur, beginning this evening, is the holiest day of the year for the Jewish community. We have an opportunity to reflect on the past year, to consider our words and deeds and think how we can renew our commitments to justice, community and repairing the world. “On this day of fasting and prayer, we think not just about how we can improve our own lives, but more importantly how we can positively contribute to the lives of those around us and the world through teshuvah, tefilah and tzedakah – repentance, prayer and good deeds. These values transcend all religions and communities, and bring out the best in each of us. “Among the many blessings that come from holidays, we are granted this moment of stillness that allows us to reflect on the progress we are making toward positive change. In the Year 5774, let us strive to be generous with one another. In my family, on Yom Kippur we share with our children an important teaching from Rabbi Tarfon. He said: ‘It is not your responsibility to finish the work of Tikkun Olam [perfecting the world], but you are not free to desist from it either.’ Let us all take the time to recommit ourselves in our own lives to these values as we look toward the year ahead. “I wish all those observing Yom Kippur a meaningful fast and a blessed new year.”
