For Janice who is back on the therapy list, for the Friers family who are making some changes, and for everyone else who may be in need of a smile to start the day here is todays offering of: Picking a bull. Maurice Jones and his father Roy farmed together up on the Fish Hatchery Road, Overlook Farm. Roy was married to Blanch, and it was an excellent example of opposites attracting. Roy was an easy going Welshman, loved to visit, had a great sense of humor, and never seemed to be in a rush about anything. That description in no way could be applied to Blanch also from staunch Welsh bloodlines was sharp speaking, no idleness, very small sense of humor and was always mentally working on the next project while she was finishing the one she was currently working on. Maurice himself tended to trend towards his mother side but he did have a sense of humor, mostly his own. Like Mo and his son Douglas Roy and Maurice had more than one disagreements on how to run the farm. Back when Artificial Insemination started out there was an abundance of salesmen running up and down the roads promoting the next best herd sire that was ever born. I guess somethings never change do they? A semen sales man stopped in while Roy was away and Maurice looked the information over, picked out a bull, and put the semen in the tank. When Roy got home he looked at the pedigree and asked Mo why on earth he had picked that bull. Mo was instantly on the defense and asked what was wrong with the bull he had picked out. Roy then went down the list, low milk production, feet and legs werent all that great, fat was low, udder was not what they were looking for, etc. Mo tried to rebuke every item but Roy kept pushing. Finally Mo had had enough and looked at Roy and said, Well I figure he at least ought to be able to pee a round hole in a snowbank! Discussion over, Roy was laughing.
