For Release: Immediately, November 10, 2014 Contact: Robin Lattimer, 607-776-9691 PALMESANO THANKS OUR VETERANS FOR SELFLESS SERVICE Highlights Holiday Card Writing Program Tomorrow, communities across our great nation will celebrate Veterans Day. We reflect. We remember. We owe our veterans a serious debt of gratitude for their selfless sacrifices. They protected our society, our culture and our families. There are no words I could say that would appropriately convey my gratitude for these incredible heroes. We enjoy our cherished freedoms because these brave servicemen and women fought for, and continue to fight for our nation. I would like to encourage everyone to take a moment and say a prayer for our veterans and their families. As Veterans Day passes, our thoughts should turn to how we can support our veterans and active duty personnel throughout the year. You may wonder what else you can do to support our brave servicemen and women. Simple acts and gestures throughout the year can be incredibly meaningful to our friends who have served in the military. Drop in and visit a veteran in your neighborhood. Take an afternoon to visit veterans at the Bath or Canandaigua VA. Teachers can encourage their students to make care packages to send to our troops serving overseas. It can be as simple as walking up to a soldier, smiling and saying “thank you.” Sophie Kartzman, 11, has set a great example for everyone in our community when it comes to showing our veterans and active duty personnel the appreciation they deserve. Last year, the Horseheads intermediate student launched a program that endeavored to send 100 holiday cards to soldiers serving overseas. This year, she set an ambitious goal. She wanted to send 1,000 cards, but the support of her classmates and the community has been so overwhelming that she increased her goal to 2,000 cards. In a recent local newspaper article, Sophie described her motivation for generating support for our veterans and active duty soldiers: “They do so much for us (overseas), fighting, risking their safety and being away from their families, she said. Were over here living our lives. They deserve some recognition.” Sophie has partnered with the American Red Cross “Holiday Mail for Heroes” Program. I encourage all of the families in the 132nd District to reach out to their local Red Cross and find out how they can participate. Again, please take some time tomorrow to reflect on the sacrifices that our veterans have made to protect our uniquely American freedoms. Simple gestures of thanks and appreciation can make a world of difference to a group of people who are truly worth honoring. Thank you, veterans! ###
