Last week Mr. Prince sent me with a contractor to the Erie Canal Village to survey the damage. According to the contractor it will take at least $2 million to get the property to the point it was 5 years ago. This means saving the Crosby house before it collapses, restoring the Shull house, building a new Packet Boat, and repairing the rest of the buildings so that the Rome Codes Department will remove the yellow tags. Also included is the complete rewiring and re-plumbing of the entire property. We should have the complete estimate by Monday, but so far just those repairs plus the purchase price puts it well over the project’s budget. In order to make this work I’m looking for volunteers with time, talent and tools to help save the village.
