For Tinubu as National Leader: The High Road Should Have Been the Choice Road. I was hoping, by now, we would long have moved past the fast-souring and boring issue of Buharis running mate and the discordant tunes from APC leadership. There are plots and subplots that, when taken together, do not seem to do much credit to the overall goodwill and momentum unleashed coming out of APCs class act of a presidential primary. I had expected that, as a deliberate choice of strategic calculation, Tinubu would take the high road and not end up as badly, psychologcally bruised as he turned out to be, jostling for a Vice Presidential slot alongside lesser contestants. But for the fact that this was a serious national issue, I would have accepted it as a high-stake chess game. The irony was that Buhari came tops again. He played the game well and maturedly enough to merit a gold. Like me, Buhari must have been somewhat surprised that Tinubu was willing to trade the reverred office of National Leader (whatever that means in real political value and constitutionally within the party) for vice presidency. Considering that the Muslim-Muslim ticket had been ruled out of political feasibility in the circumnstance, Buhari must have found it rather curious and disappointing (as I did) that Tinubu did not exhibit a firmer and more suave grasp of the unfolding developments and adapt accordingly. To me, that spoke more to the level or lack of sophistication and political savvy among his cllose advisers, not much of Tinubus own failures. With some spine and mettle, Tinubus close circle should have forewarned him of the inadvisability of the VP slot he pursued with caution thrown to the winds. APC needs to get serious. It is taking on a role bigger than its infrastructure. We are watching.
