For Wade: I think that you need to be prepared for all animals while on the trail, most snakes will leave you alone, a rattler unlike a copperhead or water moccasin will let you know that you are too close. Follow simple snake protocol, stop what you are doing, listen and assess where the rattling is coming from. Do not hike blind, look, listen and smell your environment, no need to kill unless it is trying to slither into your sleeping bag or hammock while you are resting. The forest is their home and you are a visitor, keep your head on a swivel and you will be ok.
